» Oriental Rugs
By China at 3:04 PM
My grandma just redid her whole house. It used to be more old fashion and worn out (probably from 5 sons and 10 grandchildren). But one by one her and my grandpa redecorated each room. They picked out a color palate and got new curtains and sheets for the 2 guest bedrooms and painted the walls in every room. They even redid both of the bathrooms which we still call the pink and the blue bathrooms (even though now they are tan and green).
The project started off as a 50th wedding anniversary present for each other. If anyone deserved a home makeover, it was my grandparents. They are the cutest people and they have been married for so long and are so caring and I can honestly say that I have never once seen them fight. They just get along so perfectly and I love that they are happy and doing this together for themselves, because they are always doing things for other people.
So after the finished the 3 bedrooms (including buying themselves a new water bed!) and the 2 bathrooms on the first floor, they moved to the living room, kitchen and dining room. The three rooms flow from one to the other and are somewhat connected so they made it a more neutral theme with black wood and cream and then dark red accent colors. It really is amazingly beautiful when you walk in. Then they used Oriental rugs in the hallways attaching them in a gold and maroon/dark red color to bring it all together. The wood is amazing, it is a black wood color and the cabinets were all redone as well as all of the wood finishing's and hardware to match it. The Oriental rug in between each room really ties in the whole theme to the neutral color. They went really bold on the accent color so the black and cream make it look really smooth and natural.
Overall they put a lot of time and money into and when we asked them at their 50th wedding anniversary party if they thought it was worth all of the effort and resources, they just smiled and said it was something they had always wanted to do together. It was the cutest thing and that's when I realized that it was about way more than decorating a house, it was making a home for them together.

» Insurance Quotes: Saving Money
By China at 12:18 PM
When I was browsing online I came across this website about insurance quotes and it is full of all kinds of information on health insurance, home insurance, life insurance, renters, auto and even group insurance. It is amazing to me to have a website that include all of these different groups in one and that is informational and easy to read.
As of right now I don't pay any of my insurance. I am still covered under my dad's health insurance plan and he pays for my auto insurance (thankfully). But one day I will have to make these decisions on my own and when that day comes I would like to be prepared and to have research information and all of my options including plans and prices before making a decision. I don't think necessarily I would want to get the cheapest price, but defiantly the best price for the best coverage.
On the website there are links for each of the different insurance types, like auto or life for example. First I clicked on auto insurance and it tells me why we need auto insurance and the different terms and meanings and then how to shop around and compare. It also allows you to get an insurance quote right there instantly.
When I click on life insurance, it again tells me why you need to have life insurance and how to shop around to find the best price for the best coverage. This information includes helpful tips like determining your family's needs, learning about each kind of life insurance, considering lifestyle choices and information on premiums. All of these tips are not only helpful, but also essential to getting the best plan and deal possible.
Health insurance is a big and confusing issue I think and having these tips to help you out takes away some of the worry about pressure of making the right choice. Little tips like knowing your copayment and deductible options can change your life when it comes to finances or decisions you make about what hospital or doctor to go to and when.
In order to make an educated and good decision, you need to be informed and made aware of all of your possibilities and options. Life, auto, health and every other type of insurance is a big deal in your life and when making such a huge decision, it is nice to know that there are people, or even websites to turn to that will help you make it.
» Baby gifts
By China at 10:12 AM
I was invited to my first baby shower recently. Well to be honest it really wasn't actually my first baby shower, when I was younger I went to one or two with my mom, but I really don't remember. This was my first baby shower though where I was an adult and could really understand what was going on. And in all honestly, I really don't think I like kids. It is hard for me to say because I think they are cute, like I love buying baby gifts, for other people's kids and I have a goddaughter who I adore and I think she is the greatest thing in the world. But I'm not really sure that I would want to have any. Maybe it is just because I am still young and once I am married and grown up I'll change my mind, but for now, I'll just borrow someone else's.
But I do love parties and cute themed get togethers, so baby showers are a fun thing for me. I got to see a lot of people I hadn't seen in a long time and all of the games at the shower were super cute. We played games where we had to guess how big the mom to be's stomach was or the weight of the baby (we would all put in a dollar and when the baby was born whoever was closest to the weight would win).
It was so wonderful to see all of the pink decorations (I love pink!) and there were SO many gifts. The gifts were super cute too and for part of the night it made me second guess my thoughts on having children. I'm not sure if it was the idea of children that I liked or if it was just the overload of pink, the champagne and the mounds of gifts and smiling people.
What I thought was a little different from what I imagined was that this was a couples baby shower. Usually you hear about baby showers being for just the mom to be and her girlfriends or female relatives and occasionally the father to be would be present. But this shower had a ton of guys and I think they were actually enjoying themselves and they got cigar party favors one pink chocolate one and one real one. It really was a good time all together and I can't wait for my next one!
» Wood Flooring
By China at 8:32 AM
When we moved into our house this year at school there was a no pet's allowed rule. I can see now that the reason for the rule is because of the carpeting upstairs being new and the solid wood flooring the was just put in all of the rooms on the first floor. Although it is really nice and everyone comments on the wood flooring, it still broke my heart when he told us that we couldn't get a dog.
I have never understood why people get so uptight about their floors. Aren't floors made to be walked on? At home, even though our house is really nice, we never have to take our shoes off and we have a puppy. I guess I just never understood why people want their house to look like no one lives in it. Even though we walk around our house in our shoes, we wipe them off before we come in, and the dog really doesn't have any negative effect on the wood flooring or the carpets. Our house and floors are still very nice despite these things.
One thing though that I miss from home being away from school is the heated floors. I remember when we bought the house in the subdivision we had to decide what things we wanted and underfloor heating for wood flooring and tile was an option. I also remember thinking it probably wasn't really a big deal and didn't understand why my parents wanted it so bad. But once you have it, it really is hard to go back. When I was sick I would lie on the floor because it felt so good (which is weird, I know). But it makes a big difference when it gets cold outside. At my house at school I dread getting up in the morning because our house and floors are so cold, let alone getting in the shower and getting wet. But at home it is so warm once you stand up that you don't even think about winter (until you actually have to go outside),
I think when picking out aspects of your house and just living your life daily, you need to realize what is important to your family and whets not. While some people think that wearing your shoes in the house is like a sin, we treat it more as being able to be comfortable and we can still do that and have a nice house.

» SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING IS MY SISTER'S CALLING IN LIFE
By China at 10:17 AM
My sister called my yesterday, very excited about her new job. You see, she has been taking classes in computers for the past few years, and has just landed a job doing search engine marketing. At first, I didn't really know what this was, but she went on to explain. She said that her company basically gets website exposure on the internet by using text links to get the sites ranked high with all the major search engines. She said that it is basically the equivalent of what an advertising agency does for a more traditional store front or business. They help get the site seen by as many people as possible, so that they can increase their customer base and make more and more sales. She told me that without search engine marketing, a site can't make it to the top of searches with the best search engines available, you know like Google and Yahoo. Anyway, she starts her new job on Monday, and she is really excited and will be making some good money. I asked her if she is going to continue on with her schooling, and she said definitely because there is always more to learn. She hopes one day to open her own SEO company and include features like web site design and also be a content provider. She said that some of these things she will learn in the job that she will be at, but some of the things she will actually get more exposure to in the classroom. Plus she said that sometimes on the job training makes it hard to cover all the bases, and that it is easier to air all of your questions in a classroom setting.
I am really excited for her, I know that she has been hoping to land a job like this for years. I don't really know much about the field, except what she tells me about it, I am a little less computer savvy than she is. She has always had her interest in computers, and I have always had my interest in working with kids. It is amazing how we found our callings in life at such early ages, but I am glad, some people search their whole life to find that one thing that makes them happy.

» FINDING A DENTIST MADE EASY WITH ZOC DOC
By China at 11:00 AM
I had never used a dentist referral service until last week. I recently changed jobs and the dentist I was seeing didn't accept my new insurance. I hated to change dentists, because I really liked my old one, but the cost of crowns, dental exams, cleanings, and fillings were all going to have to be my out of pocket expenses and I really just couldn't afford it. A friend at work told me about a site called ZocDoc, a dentist referral service that she used to find Brooklyn dentists one time and then she said a friend of hers had also used ZocDoc to find a dentist in New York, and they were both happy with the dentists they found so I decided to give it a try. When I first got on the site, I was surprised how thorough they were asking me what insurance I had and where I was looking to locate a dentist, so I ask for a dentist in Queens. They even asked me when I wanted an appointment for and each of their doctors had star ratings and everything. It was a really easy site to use and they let me know which dentists would accept my insurance, where they were located, and even included pictures of them. Not only that but they had right in their online system the appointment times and dates that they had available. All just a click away. I was able to schedule an appointment for the very next day, and I can't say enough good things about my experience. They knew how to handle my insurance without a hassle and with minimal paperwork, which I really liked. The staff was very professional, but not stuffy if you know what I mean, and that dentist was amazing. She was very gentle and told me exactly what I needed to have done and they even set up a payment plan that was right for me. Overall, I am thrilled with the experience I had and I can't say enough good things about this ZocDoc service. It is easy to use, and you can find a dentist quickly and easily.

» Mock Business
By China at 10:31 AM
In one of my classes in high school we had to do several projects that we're mocking real stages in our lives. One of them was college, you had to go through and look at colleges and choose your major and where you would live and what classes you would take to graduate and internships (and they had to be real) and make a budget. It actually was a really interesting and helpful project because we were so close to graduating and I still have my project that I follow today (maybe one day I'll go back and tell my teacher about it and give her a big hug).
The next project we had to do was for when we were seniors in college (pretending obviously) and we were about to graduate and we had to plan out what kind of jobs (and actually look online for job listings and interviews) where we would live, health insurance, if we would marry and how much money we would make. It really did go into depth and give you a dose of reality. You also had to get a mortgage and a car and insurance on your home and car.
The last project we had to do was two parts. The first was your dream job. You had to talk about what is was and the steps you would take to get there and achieve all of your goals and the second part was starting your own business. You had to come up with a phone number and a name and clients and obviously what kind of business. I just learned about this website Tollfreenumber.ORG that tells you everything you need to know about toll free numbers and how to even go about ordering one for yourself or your business. It really would have come in handy if I knew it when I was doing my project though.
I think overall though these projects were really hard and time consuming, but extremely helpful. I feel like in high school (especially where I went) you are in a tiny bubble. Our parents did everything for us from making our lunches (yes in high school) to driving us around and buying our cars and gas and obviously paying for everything. So we really didn't grasp the understanding of paying our own bills or getting a mortgage until this project. Even though it only got our feet wet a little bit, I really do feel ahead of the game.
» Free Stuff
By China at 10:23 AM
It is funny sometimes to see the kinds of free things that people get. I recently went to visit a different school because my best friend was turning 21 and we all went to her to celebrate and when I got there we stopped at her house before going out to dinner and I saw a huge thing of coffee sitting on her counter. I asked her where it came from and she was like, “Oh I was walking back from a class and a presenter was giving out office coffee supplies”. I thought this was really weird, Jenn on the other hand loves coffee and didn't think twice about the free gift. I guess though that so many people do like coffee and will probably remember the company that gave them that free gallon of it.
It is just odd sometimes the free stuff people give out. Like I can see companies giving out promotional pens or pads of paper or even coffee mugs. All of those things are both useful and a daily reminder of the business because you are constantly using them and looking at the name of the company or the logo. Other things though I really don't understand, like fanny packs. Who wears fanny packs anymore? Unless you are at a theme park (and that is still stretching it) why would you need or use a fanny pack. If someone gave me a free fanny pack, I would probably pay them to take it back. It just seems like a waste to make and such an unreasonable thing.
Another thing that I think is so silly to give out as a promotional item or gift is a piece of gum. No joke I really saw this one time. This is what happened. The lady from the company handed me the piece of gum, I took it out of the wrapper and put it in my mouth and then threw the wrapper away in a tiny ball and then hours later spit out the gum. To this day I wouldn't be able to remember what the company was that gave me that free piece of gum and I can't really see why (other than the fact that people like gum) they would give that out. Maybe it was just the women giving the gum out, because she didn't vocalize any information about the company, but still it was a lame attempt.

» Baby Phat
By China at 3:29 PM
When I was in high school, I was at the mall and saw the brand Baby Phat for the first time. Although then I didn't buy anything from that line, I started to see more and more people wearing it. Looking online though at their website I can see how many cute things they have. I am really into hand bags. I never used to, but over the past year or two I have accumulated more and more bags. It really doesn't matter the brand. I have a few that are really expensive and a lot that aren't at all, it just matters whether or not I like them. On the Baby Phat website they have so many cute bags. I usually go for black bags with some sort of detailing on them because the majority of my clothes are black or white and I like to be able to mix and match. Occasionally though I'll buy a really cute hot pink bag or something that stands out for a special occasion. Like for my birthday two years ago I bought a hot pink clutch that I've used a few times. Or this pink and black oversized bag that I lug everything I own around with.
The accessories on the Baby Phat website are also really cute. I'm not usually into loud jewelry, but when it's classy and cute, like some of the necklaces or even the head bands here I am totally for it. Another thing that I noticed about this brand is that they carry plus sizes. Although I'm not a plus size, I feel like girls I know (who really aren't that big, but the sizes are smaller) have trouble finding stylish cute clothes in the plus size departments. It is nice to see that the same style and cute clothes that they offer for my size is still offered at the same price for the plus sizes too.
My favorite though is the shoes. They have all kinds of cute style and they are really at an affordable price. They have ballet flats and pumps as well as sandals and boots. Sometimes it is hard to find shoes that are not in season, like flip flops, but this website has a lot to offer. It is nice to see a variety of items that are made for a wide selection of taste and sizes.
» TV and College Students
By China at 1:54 PM
Direct TV was the only insist that my roommate Meghan made when we moved into our house this year at school. I on the other hand wanted to make sure we had a beer pong table, heaters and enough room for my treadmill. She said when we were signing the lease that she didn't care about what the house really looked like and that all the decisions could be made by us as long as she got DirecTV. So sure enough, two days before we moved in she called and had her TV set up. It made me wonder though, how do people choose, like at college age, what kinds of service providers they want. Meghan has Direct TV at home so it seemed like that was what she knew and she really liked it, but when it comes to other things, how do we make those decisions.
We are taught in finance to look into every option and find out what you can get the best for your money for. Well when we did the chapter on insurance and we had to ask our parents about our car insurance (or people in the class who had their own insurance already) and how they went about choosing it. My dad told me when I asked him that the auto insurance provider that we have now and have always had is the same provider that my grandparents have and have always had. While my grandparents are probably the most efficient and smart people I know, they have two cars and only two very experienced, clean record drivers on their plan. While at my house, we have 4 cars, my dad, who is a great experiences driver, but then my sister and I who are young and have gotten many into many accidents and tickets combined. It just makes me wonder that if we looked and shopped around if we would get a better deal? We looked online for DirecTV at http://www.directsattv.com/. Don't get me wrong though, I love the people with our auto insurance provider (unfortunately I have had to talk to them several times). And I am sure that we do get a good (well as good as you can with our records) price and we are treated very well and have had no problems. But the thing is, since he (like a lot of other people0 only looked at one option, we don't know really if we could be doing better).
» LOOKING INTO DEDICATED SERVERS
By China at 12:15 PM
My employer put me on a committee to come up with different solutions to our businesses internet issues. For many years they had been dealing with the same internet service provider, and found that they were not receiving the kind of service they wanted. There were long waits for connections and the network was just not working the way they had expected it to. With this, they decided to put together a task force to address these issues and figure out some of the best solutions to these problems. We decided as a team, that perhaps the best way to deal with all this was to address it first on the individual level and then return to the group and brainstorm. None of us really knew much about what was available as far as internet services were concerned, so this seemed like the best plan. At home that evening I decided to sit down and investigate all the different options that were available and I was amazed to find out how many choices were available all at reasonable prices. I jotted down some of my thoughts and some of the information that was available, and came up with some Dedicated Servers that sounded really good to me. I wrote down the one web site that seemed the best to me http://www.alentus.com/dedicated-hosting/server.asp . So that I could find it again if everyone thought it sounded good. At the end of the week, we all got together and met on this subject and only 3 of the 5 of us had done any information gathering about the different servers available. I was amazed that some of these people couldn't be bothered, but I guess that is the true nature of some people. Honestly, of those of us who had looked into it we all had down information about dedicated servers, you know the ones where you have a server all to yourself, and two of us had the same exact website down on our list, which I thought spoke to how impressive this company sounded. That is who we decided to go with and we passed the information to the higher ups in the company. You always worry a little when you make a suggestion like that, will it work out okay, will they be happy with the suggestion. Well, I am happy to report that they are thrilled with the company and the price and we are on our way to having a more effective internet server and the best thing is that this service is even more cost effective. I am really glad to have been a part of instituting this change in our company.

» Diet pills and ECA stack
By China at 7:26 AM
ECA is an acronym for ephedrine, caffeine, and aspirin, and is used as a stimulant in weight loss. The ephedrine is what acts as the primary weight loss component because it helps to speed up the metabolism of the person taking the diet pills.
Diet pills to me used to seem dangerous, but after looking into them more I really have made a complete turn on my view of them. I feel like knowing more about diet pills helps me to understand them more and how they work. As long as people are taking diet pills the way that they are meant to be taken (in the dosage meant) and are consulting a doctor, they have no reason really to be afraid. I feel like diet pills now are really there to help enhance what you are already doing. Right now, the new food pyramid includes exercise and vitamins, maybe one day it will include diet pills? It is crazy to think how much our country has evolved. We basically have a drug (or hundreds of them) for everything. I think the only bad thing right now about diet pills is that there are so many different kinds, it might be hard for someone to really find one that works for them individually and then cause them to have to buy a ton of them or maybe even overlap doses. I do believe however that if you are taking the pill as diagnosed (or instructed on the label and your consulted doctor), while having a well balanced and healthy diet and working out and including exercise in your routine, you will definitely see results. The only problem I can see coming in is when people have unrealistic hopes or beliefs. Yes, a diet pill will help you to speed along your weight loss when you are doing what you are supposed to, but you aren't going to magically lose weight and shed hundreds of pounds in days with ECA stack. I think that when people get unrealistic ideas or goals, that is when they tend to take more pills or even several different brands at once. I also think people expect results so soon now a days and sometimes you just have to wait a few days or weeks. Diet pills are proven to work, so just give them time to do their job while you are doing yours.
